Treatment of Glaucoma

Regular Eye Examinations

There is currently no known cure for glaucoma. Only regular thorough eye examinations will help identify glaucoma, since few patients realize they have this sight-threatening disease. Your examinations at Green Bay Eye Clinic will include painless pressure checks, medical history, and examination of the optic nerve to help identify glaucoma in its early stages. Green Bay Eye Clinic also offers the most modern in state-of–the-art technology available to diagnose the disease: the GDX Nerve Fiber Analyzer.

Monitoring and Managing

Glaucoma can be controlled with the proper treatment. Most often, eye drops and sometimes tablets, are used to help slow down the progression of damage from the pressure build-up within the eye. Occasionally, surgery is needed to help drain the excess fluid. In all cases, early diagnosis is the key to preventing loss of sight.

Glaucoma is a life-long condition that needs continuous management. Patients must remain vigilant, and must continue to monitor symptoms indicating changes that things are getting worse.

A person must also be vigilant regarding their general health. A person’s general health can have a profound effect on their glaucoma, and visa versa. Obesity, diet, exercise, and medications for blood flow or other health conditions must be considered part of one’s basic well-being and may impact upon glaucoma.
