Who Will Get Glaucoma?
Anyone can get glaucoma. Glaucoma is a significant
cause of blindness worldwide and is a leading cause of irreversible
blindness in the United States. Over 2 million Americans
have glaucoma, but only an estimated half of those realize they
have the disease. For this reason, 900,000 victims in the
U.S. suffer visual impairment, and approximately 100,000 more
are legally blind from the disease.
The risk of glaucoma increases with age. One
in fifty Americans over the age of 35, and three in every hundred
over the age of 65 acquire glaucoma. Family background is
also significant, since glaucoma seems to be hereditary.
People with diabetes, African Americans, and those who use forms
of steroids, are at high risk.
